Relationship Advice

The Chinese zodiac is based on a 12-year cycle, with each year represented by a different animal. People born under each sign are said to exhibit sets of personality traits unique to that sign, and somewhat associated with the animal itself. The system can further be refined by studying a person's birth month and even birth hour, but for most casual use, the zodiac is used with just the year.

One of the most important uses for the signs of the Chinese zodiac is to determine if people are compatible. That's usually in a romantic sense, but any sort of relationship can be influenced by each person's birth sign.

>Those faithful to the Chinese zodiac will always consult it before beginning a relationship, to make sure the signs are appropriate. Two incompatible signs are the easiest to determine. Relationships will be difficult for any people whose animals signs are directly opposite one another on the zodiac wheel. Their personalities and views are just not going to mesh well. These incompatible pairings are:

  • Rat and Horse
  • Ox and Ram
  • Tiger and Monkey
  • Rabbit and Rooster
  • Dragon and Dog
  • Snake and Pig

When establishing compatibility, each sign is grouped with two others, creating 4 groups called "trines". The 4 trines include these signs:

  • Rat, Dragon, Monkey
  • Ox, Snake, Rooster
  • Tiger, Horse, Dog
  • Rabbit, Ram, Pig

When looking at the wheel of the zodiac circle, the signs in each trine are evenly spaced at 4 years apart. People born under these signs will share similar mindsets, outlooks and personalities. This makes them very suitable for close relationships.

The first trine of Rat, Dragon and Monkey includes the most passionate and powerful signs of the zodiac. These people can be quite overwhelming to be around, unless they are paired with others of the same personality. Relationships can be intense, but they wouldn't want it any other way.

The second trine contains the signs of Ox, Snake and Rooster. These animals are usually very patient and calm. Their careful nature is usually only appreciated by others who share it.

Tigers, Horses and Dogs make up the third trine. These people are energetic and individualistic, and will find a good partner among themselves because they are all looking for a true soul mate.

The final trine of the Chinese zodiac holds the Rabbit, Ram and Pig. Their very giving personalities can be abused by some, unless matched with someone who is their equal in that regard.

Now, there are many other possible pairings for each sign that then fall neither in the compatible nor the incompatible group. What about a Rat and a Tiger, or a Horse and Ram for example? Each various couple will have its own chances for success, depending on the nature of the relationship and the unique personalities of each person.

And of course, all people are different and there are no rules set in stone about who may or may not get along with who else.
